Arguably the MOST IMPORTANT punch in a boxers arsenal. The Jab is used to set your opposition up, to keep your opposition at bay and when used correctly lays the ground work for your success or failure. Generally thrown with the ‘weaker’ hand although some success can be gained by jabbing with your stronger arm, both speed and power wise.
To work on the effectiveness of your jab, work on the following points:
- Keep your eyes on your target
- Non-punching hand by your cheek, protecting your face
- Non-punching arm/elbow protecting ribs
- Lower body 50/50 weight distribution
- Lead arm fully extended
- Fist rotated to land with knuckles
- Fist clenched/arm engaged on contact
- Core engaged
- Hip rotation
- Front foot, slight pivot
